Mice. There are lots, and lots of mice around.
Now, I guess you might be thinking things could be worse. He is in a still volatile region of the world, surrounded by a lot of people who wouldn't mind if harm comes to an American. But there's more to the mice problem.
The urgency to rid the mice from base and, in particular, his work area?
Where there are mice, there are cobras soon to follow.
