Yep--been doing that down here in FL since the kids have been in school as well....and my kids go to a school named after an Indian tribe where the mascot is a Chief!
I still tell my fitness students to sit "Indian Style" as we are ending a class and stretching, etc. I mean you can't tell older adults to sit criss cross applesauce, right?

And it is universal. Down here in VA as well, we have been using "criss-cross applesauce" for years too. :)
